Group conversation practice or private tutoring: which suits your goal?

Choose the kind of practice that matches what you need next.

Start with the outcome you need

Group conversation practice and private tutoring can serve different purposes. A peer group gives you opportunities to use English with other learners. A tutor can offer instruction and feedback tailored to your needs, depending on their approach and the service you choose.

Before comparing formats, name one concrete goal. Do you want to join everyday conversations more often? Understand why you make a particular mistake? Prepare for a specific interview? A clear goal makes the choice easier to assess.

Compare the experience, not just the label

Who do you speak with?Other learners, often sharing a topic or task.A tutor, usually in a one-to-one setting.
What is the focus?Using language, listening, and responding in a group.Goals agreed with the tutor; instruction and targeted practice may be included.
How is time shared?Speaking time is shared among participants. The session is dedicated to one learner, though the tutor also speaks.
What feedback is included?Do not assume individual correction or teacher feedback.Ask the tutor what kind of feedback they provide and when.
What should you check?Group size, level, structure, and participation rules.Relevant experience, teaching approach, goals, and lesson conditions.

These are general distinctions. Teacher-led group classes are another format and may include instruction and correction. Always check what a particular provider actually offers.

Where SpeakSix fits

SpeakSix offers structured conversations between up to six learners at a similar starting level, from A1 to B2. A class lasts 60 minutes: two 25-minute speaking rounds, five minutes for a break and self-assessment, and five minutes for a final self-assessment and wrap-up. Topics, personal prompts, optional phrases, and timed turns support participation.

A dedicated teacher is not included. The 60 minutes are the full class duration, not 60 minutes of individual speaking time. You can finish early or pass a turn.

This format may fit a learner who wants more chances to put familiar English into use and respond to different people. For individual instruction, detailed correction, or specialised preparation, check whether a tutor or another service better matches the task.

Ask these questions before booking

  • What would I like to do more comfortably after several sessions?
  • Do I mainly need practice opportunities, an explanation, or personalised feedback?
  • Am I comfortable sharing speaking time with a group?
  • Does the offered level and topic fit what I can use today?
  • Are the schedule, total price, and booking conditions clear?

Neither format guarantees a particular result or timeline. Your needs may change, and you can combine formats if the combination is useful and affordable for you.

Choose one manageable next step

If you are considering a peer group, try a few of its sample prompts aloud. Notice whether the level feels usable and whether the topics give you something to say. Preview the class format and check current availability before choosing a package.

If you are considering a tutor, describe your goal with an example: “I can explain my work, but I find follow-up questions difficult.” Ask how they would approach that need and how you would review progress together.

After your first experience, assess something specific. Did the format help you practise the task you came for? Was there an appropriate amount of support? Use those observations to decide what to try next.

Take one idea into practice.

Complete this sentence: “Right now, I need more help with ___.” Decide whether practice, instruction, or both would serve that need.
